Nokia is having a tough time getting mobile carriers like AT&T to stock its Lumia smartphone. According to a Monday report from Bloomberg, one AT&T store located in Manhattan didn't have a single Nokia handset on display last week. Of course, there was an abundance of Android-based smartphones, along with Apple's coveted iPhone.
Just to recap, Nokia's Lumia 900 has only been the market for nine months. But, apparently, that's been enough time for some stores to make it seem extinct. The lack of the Lumia's presence on major store shelves doesn't bode well for Nokia's upcoming announcement of its Windows Phone 8-based handsets (slated to roll out as early as September). Using some hard numbers to put it in perspective, Nokia sold 600,000 handsets in North America last quarter, while Apple sold an eye-popping 5.9 million iPhones in the same quarter.
Some folks are confident that Microsoft's advertising Windows 8 software will help the Lumia make a bigger splash in the market. But if Nokia hopes to reach a level playing field with its biggest rivals, it may have to get a little more creative than that. And we're not talking about crafting a new line of nail polish; the company is going to have to offer a lot more than a celebrity-inspired manicure to put itself back in the game.
As Paris-based fund manager at Ofi Asset Management told Bloomberg, ?To come back, they [Nokia] either need to surf on a Microsoft success in mobile or become cool again ? two complicated challenges. Complicated, indeed. And it certainly isn't helping the situation that the major carriers don't seem to be in Nokia's corner (or even providing them a corner, for that matter).
What do you think, should AT&T rethink its in-store shelving strategy to incorporate Nokia handsets?
