Lionel Richie says his own songs helped him.

Many people have turned to music at sad times in their lives. Singer Lionel Richie is no different -- except the music he turned to was his own.

Richie told the U.K. Mirror that in the 1990s, he was going through a divorce and fighting depression

"Then a friend said to me: ?Lionel, I have some inspirational tapes I want you to listen to,'" Richie recalled to the newspaper. "He handed me my own songs with certain ones underlined and I started listening to my lyrics ? this time from the point of view of someone who needed that message.

?I used to look out into the audience and wonder why that guy was crying to one of my songs and now I get it -? it just hits something in your core," Richie said.

The singer also admitted that he wasn't always there for daughter Nicole when she was growing up. ?When Nicole was young I was trying to become Lionel Richie," the singer said. "I wasn?t there as much as I should have been. ... These days we are incredibly close and I am a very proud grandfather. She?s a wonderful mother.?

Richie will start his first U.S. tour in a decade this fall. "I have never had a job in my life," he told the Mirror. "This is still my hobby and I want to use the gift for good."

Sunsong ranch, multi harvest (no xrealm inv) - OwnedCore

Can you please explain this better, possible use some screenshots? I'm afraid this isn't very easy to understand.

1) Obtain Stubborn weeds or Vermin (In the soil, not the plants).
2) Without leaving the farm, join for a pet battle. (Does this need to be a win, or can we just surrender?)
3) I've yet to see any bugged weeds or vermin yet.

EDIT:

Confirming this does work and using better instructions.

1) Obtain Stubborn weeds or Vermin (In the soil, not the plants).
2) Without leaving the farm, join for a pet battle. (Surrender the battle).
3) After returning back to the farm you will now notice they are 1 more of every weed or vine you see.

For example, the weed in the middle I dug out to check if there were more and there was.
4) When you're ready, get rid of all the vines/vermin and do your normal farming. When returning back you will harvest more produce than before.
For example: If you 1 vine and 15 other empty plots, repeat the pet battle twice, you will get normal produce x 3.

"I saw the traveler make his way toward the monolith,
That thin gash amidst the clouds;
An open seam between heaven and earth that eluded the Eye of God.

Or perhaps it had not; perhaps it beckoned from one realm
To the other, wedded And ruled as one;
For look how clean it splits the horizon 'twain, absorbs it,
Makes it Strange,
An indomitable beam,

Florida State sending three commitments to The Opening, looking for more

The Seminoles already have three, and are looking to add more.

The Florida State Seminoles are off to another strong recruiting start, and are sending three current commitments to Nike's The Opening -- the top recruiting event in the country. And FSU is targeting about 20 additional players.

Commitments

LB Kain Daub (@DaubKain), 6-3.5, 238
Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood
Daub was a Class 8A All-State pick after recording 74 tackles, seven sacks and five forced fumbles as a junior. He committed to Florida State over offers from Alabama, Miami, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, South Carolina, USC and UCLA.

WR JoJo Robinson, 5-11, 178
Miami (Fla.) Northwestern
The speedburner started off the NFTC tour by running a 4.41 40 at the Miami Nike Combine. He came back out to the Miami NFTC in March and tore it up. Has the speed to get behind any defense and showed off good hands in Miami. He committed to Florida State over offers from LSU, Miami, USC and UCLA among others.

DB Derwin James Jr. (@derwinjames6), 6-2, 200 (Class of '15)
Auburndale, Fla.
James will be a junior this season and impressed at the Orlando NFTC where he ran a 4.66 in the 40, recorded a 35.1 and dominated the one-on-one drills to earn All-Camp Team honors. A Class 5A Honorable Mention All-State player, he has already committed to Florida State.

Targets

Florida State is also targeting several top players including Tony Brown, Lorenzo Carter, George Campbell (2015), Malachi Dupre, Adoree Jackson, Thomas Holley, Corey Martinez, Trey Marshall, and Shae McKenzie, Montae Nicholson, Derrelll Scott and Montel McBride.

Cassidy: NSA muzzle should be removed from Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo

The NSA spying scandal and the way it runs through Silicon Valley "is the story that just won't go away," to borrow a phrase from Fox News.

Details -- some accurate, some not -- of the government's snooping continue to trickle out. Many of us continue to wonder just what the government has scooped up about us from our go-to social networking and search companies like Google (GOOG), Facebook, Yahoo (YHOO) and Apple (AAPL). And some of us wonder just what those companies have done to try to protect our privacy

It's the last question that has become my personal obsession. The feds and the commercial keepers of the Internet have said all the right things to make us feel better. When several news outlets were reporting that the NSA through a program called Prism was tapping directly into the servers of search engines and social media sites, executives said that was not the case. The NSA explained

that it was only targeting foreign suspects and only with the authorization of a top-secret court.

But does any of that put you at ease? Me neither.

There is something that could help us all feel better about the oceans of personal data that are sloshing around out there: National security officials should free companies like Google, Facebook, Apple and Yahoo to explain what is going on in much greater detail. After all, we are their customers. We put our trust in them. They have benefited greatly from using our data to target ads and develop marketing schemes. They know more about us than we know about ourselves.

All this was on my mind recently when I attended a New York Times global forum. This one, hosted by columnist Thomas Friedman, centered on the notion that we'd moved from being a connected society to a hyper-connected one and that the transformation has changed everything from business to security to philanthropy to education to relationships.

The spin was generally positive, but obviously this increased connectivity has some serious down sides.

Among the many speakers was Dov Seidman, CEO of corporate advisory firm LRN and a guy who's become a guru of good corporate behavior. He seemed a

An illustration picture shows the logo of the U.S. National Security Agency on the display of an iPhone in Berlin, June 7, 2013. REUTERS/Pawel Kopczynski (PAWEL KOPCZYNSKI)

logical one to ask about the role of valley companies in the NSA drama.

"At the end of the day," Seidman, whose outfit works with Fortune 500 companies globally, told me, "the Silicon Valley companies that are capturing a lot of data are in a very precarious and a very rich relationship with their (customers). Their currency is trust and if they do anything to betray that trust, it's going to be hard to regain it."

No kidding. The problem is that it's going to be hard for Silicon Valley companies to maintain or regain that trust if the federal government continues to muzzle them.

Part of Seidman's gospel is that the world has become a place where what companies do is important, but more important is how they do things. The explosion of social media and the ability to immediately and broadly call out bad corporate behavior, means that companies that act unethically or otherwise mistreat customers, partners, suppliers and others will have a hard time getting away with it.

Few things matter more to people than their personal information, said Seidman, author of "How: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything." "So these are the crown jewels that these companies are possessing," he said. "They've got to handle them with great care."

How have they done? Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft and others have pushed back, asking the feds to let them disclose more details about government demands for information and corporate responses to those demands. But the feds have provided little useful relief.

No question it would be good to get a good accounting. I'd also be interested in knowing what search and social media companies did when the NSA first came calling. The week the NSA news broke, I wrote a blog post wondering whether Silicon Valley companies stood up for our privacy. Did they go to court to fight the orders to turn over data? Did they use their considerable connections in Congress? It would be fair to say the post was critical and assumed the worst.

But now comes news that at least one company in 2008 fought a request made under the law that governs the Prism program. The legal battle was fought secretly and to this day the court hasn't disclosed the name of the company, although The New York Times reported that it was Yahoo.

That is exactly the sort of information that the feds should allow companies to disclose. There is no need to keep the targeted company secret five years later. If they ever doubted it, terrorists now know that investigators monitor U.S. Internet companies; and they know Yahoo is a U.S. Internet company. That Yahoo fought a surveillance order would tell those who mean us harm nothing they don't already know.

But it would tell consumers a lot. For instance, if Yahoo fought the feds prying through Prism and Google didn't (something we can't know for sure) a reasonable consumer might want to shift from Google to Yahoo for search, or from Gmail to Yahoo Mail for correspondence.

At the very least, a reasonable consumer would want to know the track record of the two companies in order to make an informed decision.

Under the hood is the familiar 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which combines direct injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging technologies to help deliver 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Our favorite attribute is the torque band: 90 percent of peak torque is available from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm.

Fuel economy?is said to be 16/22 mpg city/highway, for the rear-wheel-drive model. Opting for all-wheel drive will diminish those figures slightly.

The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic and a launch-optimized 4.10 rear axle--the shortest final drive ratio offered in an EcoBoosted F-150. An electronic rear differential is also fitted as standard.

Rebels kill policeman, injure 14 others in Chechnya

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Rebels have killed a Russian policeman and injured 14 others in Chechnya, police said on Saturday, a rare clash in the now mostly calm North Caucasus republic which lies near to the venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Moscow waged two wars against separatist rebels in mainly Muslim Chechnya in the 1990s but the province has been fairly peaceful in recent years as Islamist insurgents have turned their focus to the nearby regions of Dagestan and Ingushetia.

This month, President Vladimir Putin put Russia's security forces on high alert to safeguard the Games due to take place next year in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

A police spokesman said by telephone from the Chechen capital Grozny that a police patrol had run into a band of rebels in the southern Shatoi district.

"They (the rebels) were ordered to put down their weapons, but instead they opened fire," he said, adding that he could not say how many insurgents had been involved.

Russia's interior ministry said security forces were pursuing the rebels in a mountainous forest region.

Human rights activists say Russia's Islamist insurgency is fuelled by a combination of religion, official corruption and strong arm tactics against suspected militants by local leaders.

Three killed after small plane crashes in Alaska

By Gillian Spear, NBC News

Three passengers died when their small plane crashed near Alaska?s Summit Airport on Friday, authorities said.

?A Division of Forestry employee discovered the downed plane while investigating a possible wildland fire that was ultimately caused by the crash,? according to a dispatch by the Alaska State Troopers.

The twin-engine Beechcraft Baron aircraft took off from Fairbank on Friday morning. The crash outside Cantwell, Alaska, is believed to have happened just before noon local time.

An official cause for the crash has not been determined, but state transportation officials observed smoke from the Tanana Valley wildfire near the flight route that may have aggravated already poor weather conditions.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have said they are looking into the cause of the crash.

Are college student hook-ups linked to anxiety and depression?

June 28, 2013 ? As narratives of "hook-up" culture take center stage in popular media, behavioral researchers are starting to ask what psychological consequences, if any, may be in store for young adults who engage in casual sex.

A new study in The Journal of Sex Research found higher levels of general anxiety, social anxiety, and depression among students who recently had casual sex. Entitled Risky Business: Is There an Association between Casual Sex and Mental Health among Emerging Adults?, the study surveyed over 3,900 heterosexual college students from across the United States about their casual sex behaviors and mental well-being. "Casual sex" was defined as having intercourse with a partner one has known for less than a week. Students from over 30 institutions around the country completed the online survey, making this the largest sample to be collected for a study on this topic. On average, 11% of students reported a casual sex encounter during the month prior to the survey, the majority of whom were men.

The study was led by Dr. Melina M. Bersamin of California State University, Sacramento. According to Dr. Bersamin, "It is premature to conclude that casual sexual encounters pose no harmful psychological risks for young adults." The results "suggest that among heterosexual college students, casual sex was negatively associated with well-being and positively associated with psychological distress."

The researchers also investigated the role of gender in determining mental distress linked to casual sex. Prior studies have found that women respond more negatively to casual sex than men, possibly because of double standards that allow men to have more sexual encounters with a greater number of partners than women. In this study, however, gender did not have an effect on outcomes.

"Risky Business" opens the door to future research questions about causal links between sexual behavior and mental health. Researchers have yet to determine whether casual sex leads to psychological distress, or if existing mental health problems cause young adults to engage in riskier behaviors.

Zach Braff to star in 'Bullets Over Broadway'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Zach Braff will make his Broadway debut next year in a musical adaptation of Woody Allen's crime caper "Bullets Over Broadway." The only person who might be more excited than Braff is his dad.

"If my father loved two things most, it was Woody Allen movies and Broadway musicals," Braff said by phone from Los Angeles. "When I called my father, I said, 'Are you sitting down?'"

Written by Allen and Douglas McGrath, the story follows a struggling young playwright who is forced to cast a mobster's talentless girlfriend in his latest drama. Braff will play the hero, portrayed by John Cusack in the 1994 film.

"It's thrilling," Braff says. "I keep waking up expecting it to be a dream."

Five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the show, which will start performances in March 2014 at the St. James Theatre. The show will feature a full orchestra playing music of the 1920s.

The musical sees Braff return to his acting roots: He played Allen's son in one scene when he was 18 in the film "Manhattan Murder Mystery" before going to Northwestern University to study film.

"If you would have asked me a couple months ago 'What are your dreams as an actor?' I would have said, 'I'd love to do a Broadway musical one day and I'd love to work with Woody Allen again.' When I got the call from Woody and Susan Stroman, my head sort of exploded."

The rest of the cast will be made up of Vincent Pastore ("The Sopranos"), Betsy Wolfe ("The Mystery of Edwin Drood"), Lenny Wolpe ("The Drowsy Chaperone") and Helene Yorke ("Grease").

Braff grew up in northern New Jersey and caught the performing bug from his father, a lawyer who did community theater for fun. Though he's never done musical theater professionally, Braff often sang as the daydreaming Dr. John "J.D." Dorian on "Scrubs" and he won a Grammy Award for best compilation soundtrack for "Garden State." He says he's already started working with a vocal coach.

After "Scrubs," Braff filmed the dark indie "High Cost of Living" and acted in the off-Broadway play "Trust" and had a part in Sam Raimi's "Oz the Great and Powerful."

Braff also penned a play of his own, "All New People," his first piece of original writing since the 2004 film "Garden State," his sweet ode to disillusionment starring himself and Natalie Portman. "All New People" had a run off-Broadway in 2011 and was later mounted in London, with Braff starring.

Braff this spring turned to the crowd-funding site Kickstarter to raise $2 million in three days to fund his film, "Wish I Was Here" a follow-up to "Garden State." He says he'll work on the film for the rest of the year before hitting Broadway, and he hopes "Wish I Was Here," which he co-wrote with his brother Adam, will be due out in the fall of 2014.

In the meantime, he has a date with Broadway. It's something his father might be interested in, too. "I said to Woody, 'He'll be there more than you.' I said, 'I might need a cot for my father between the matinees and the evening show.'"

The best things you'll be playing later, according to critics ...

critics

Just about every publication (us included!) has its own ?Best of E3?awards soon after gaming?s biggest annual event ? but a number of them also get together afterwards to decide which gaming hardware really is the best, by way of the ?Game Critics Awards.? Real gaming industry professionals like CNN, The L.A Times, Entertainment Weekly and the Hollywood Reporter get together with people who know nothing about games like Polygon, Kotaku, Joystiq and Destructoid make up these critics ? and this is what impressed them most.

TitanFall, the new shooter from EA and Respawn has set a new record for the Game Critic Awards by nabbing six of the nominations. We liked TitanFall quite a bit, but feel that it?s really just another shooter ? even if it has some clever multiplayer tricks.

If you?re wondering why some of our favourites ? like The Witcher 3 and The Division ? aren?t on the list, they had to be playable to be eligible. Here are the nominees for the Game Critics Awards 2013.

Could a diet high in fish and flax help prevent broken hips?

June 27, 2013 ? Higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood may reduce the risk for hip fractures in postmenopausal women, recent research suggests.

Scientists analyzed red blood cell samples from women with and without a history of having a broken hip. The study showed that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids from both plant and fish sources in those blood cells were associated with a lower likelihood of having fractured a hip.

In addition to omega-3s, the researchers looked at omega-6 fatty acids, which are generally plentiful in a Western diet. The study also showed that as the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3s increased, so did the risk for hip fracture.

Though the study did not define the mechanisms for these relationships, the researchers hypothesized that inflammation may contribute to bone resorption, the breaking down of bone caused by the release of cells called osteoclasts.

"Inflammation is associated with an increased risk of bone loss and fractures, and omega-3 fatty acids are believed to reduce inflammation. So we asked if we would see fractures decrease in response to omega-3 intake," said Rebecca Jackson, the study's senior author and a professor of endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at The Ohio State University.

"One thing that was critically important was that we didn't use self-report of food intake, because there can be errors with that. We looked directly at the exposure of the bone cell to the fatty acids, which is at the red blood cell level," said Jackson, also associate dean for clinical research in Ohio State's College of Medicine. "Red blood cell levels also give an indication of long-term exposure to these fatty acids, which we took into account in looking for a preventive effect."

Broken hips are the most common osteoporosis-related fractures, with an estimated 350,000 occurring annually in the United States. About 20 percent of people die in the year following a hip fracture.

The research is published in a recent issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

The observational study did not measure cause and effect, so the researchers say the findings are not definitive enough to suggest that taking omega-3 supplements would prevent hip fractures in postmenopausal women.

"We don't yet know whether omega-3 supplementation would affect results for bone health or other outcomes," said Tonya Orchard, assistant professor of human nutrition at Ohio State and first author of the study. "Though it's premature to make a nutrition recommendation based on this work, I do think this study adds a little more strength to current recommendations to include more omega-3s in the diet in the form of fish, and suggests that plant sources of omega-3 may be just as important for preventing hip fractures in women."

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are both polyunsaturated fatty acids and essential fatty acids, meaning they contribute to biological processes but must be consumed because the body does not produce them on its own. Previous research has suggested that while both types of fatty acids are linked to health benefits, omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and omega-6 fatty acids seem to have both anti- and pro-inflammatory effects.

The researchers used blood samples and hip fracture records from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large national prospective study of postmenopausal women that enrolled participants between 1993 and 1998 and followed them for 15 years. For this new work, the sample consisted of red blood cell samples and records from 324 pairs of WHI participants, half of whom had broken their hips before Aug. 15, 2008, and the other half composed of age-matched controls who had never broken a hip.

The analysis showed that higher levels of total omega-3 fatty acids and two other specific kinds of omega-3s alone were associated with a lower risk of hip breaks in the study sample.

On the other hand, women who had the highest ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids had nearly twice the risk of hip fractures compared to women with the lowest ratios. The current typical American diet contains between 15 and 17 times more omega-6 than omega-3, a ratio that previous research has suggested should be lowered to 4-to-1, or even 2-to-1, by increasing omega-3s, to improve overall health. The primary omega-6 fatty acid in the diet is linoleic acid, which composes about 99 percent of Americans' omega-6 intake and is found in corn, soybean, safflower and sunflower oils.

The specific omega-3 sources associated with lower risk for broken hips were ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which comes from plant sources such as flaxseed oil and some nuts, and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), which is found in fatty types of fish. The other marine-sourced omega-3, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), on its own did not have a significant link to lower hip-fracture risk, "but all three omega-3s were in the protective direction," Orchard said.

Jackson, who was a vice chair of the WHI for more than a decade, said continuing analyses of data from the WHI will dig down to the genetic influences on metabolism and absorption of nutrients, and whether such genetic differences could affect health risk factors in postmenopausal women.

This work was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. The WHI was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Russian senators give green light to 'gay propaganda' ban ? RT ...

Published time: June 26, 2013 19:58 RIA Novosti / Alexey Filippov

Russia?s upper house, the Federation House, has approved a bill introducing fines for propaganda of non-traditional sex relations to minors, including in the media, on the internet and via viral adverts.

Some 137 senators voted for the draft law which introduces administrative liability and fines of up to a million roubles (over US$ 30,000) for promotion of homosexuality among children. One senator abstained from voting and no one voted against the legislation.

The controversial bill ? which critics fear may spark a wave of homophobia in the country ? was approved by the lower house, the State Duma, on June 11. The vast majority of the population ? 88 % - is also in favor of the introduction of the ban, according to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM).

The draft law is not discriminative against LGBT people and is only aimed to protect minors, Federation Council speaker, Valentina Matvienko, emphasized on Wednesday, ahead of voting.

Unlike in the Soviet times, people with non-traditional sexual orientation are no longer prosecuted in Russia, she reminded.

?They are ordinary equal members of the society. As adults, they are entitled to decide how they want to live. But when it comes to minors [the ban on propaganda] is not someone?s whim, but a demand from the society,? Matvienko said.?

Under the bill, individuals will be fined up to 5,000 roubles ($US 152) for such propaganda, officials will have to pay up to 50,000 roubles (about US$ 1,500) and companies ? up to 500,000 roubles (about $US 15,000).

If law violators use the media or the internet for the promotion of non-traditional sex relations, they will face even harsher punishment. For instance, individuals will have shell out up to 100,000 roubles (about US$ 3,000), while organizations ? a million roubles or face a 90-day suspension of activities.

Foreign citizens or stateless persons who violate the ban will face a fine or an arrest for up to 15 days followed by a deportation from Russia.?

The law also defines what is considered the gay propaganda of non-traditional relations. It is the distribution of information aimed at forming non-traditional sexual concept in children, describing such ties as attractive, promoting the distorted understanding of social equality of traditional and non-traditional relations and also unwanted solicitation of information that could provoke interest in such relations.

The bill was slammed as ?anti-gay? by gay rights activists both in Russia and abroad. The issue was raised again earlier in the week. The Russian president called on Western countries not to interfere with Russian internal affairs, speaking at a media conference during his trip to Finland.? He reiterated that the draft law is not about introducing any sort of sanctions on homosexuality and does not violate rights of sexual minorities.

?Some countries ... think that there is no need to protect children from this. We Do. We are not going to interfere,? he said. ?But we are going to provide such protection the way that State Duma lawmakers have decided.?

To come into force, the bill has yet to be signed by the president.

Devo drummer Alan Myers dies of brain cancer

Alan Myers, the former longtime drummer for the band Devo, best known for "Whip It," has died after a battle with brain cancer. He was 58.

Myers died Monday in Los Angeles, where he lived, Devo spokesman Michael Pilmer said Wednesday.

Myers was the band's drummer from 1976 to 1985 during Devo's heyday. The group was formed in Akron, Ohio, in the early 1970s by Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, and introduced themselves to the world in 1977 by making a spastic version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."

Casale told The Associated Press on Wednesday that without Myers, Devo never would have reached the heights it did, calling him the best drummer he has ever played with.

"We were mostly in basements and garages writing songs. It was Alan that brought everything to life," Casale said. "That was the catalyst where everything clicked."

He called Myers "the human metronome."

"People watching him thought we were using a drum machine," Casale said. "Nobody had ever drummed like that."

Casale described meeting and playing with Myers for the first time in 1976. After their first session ended, Casale ? who had been facing away from Myers ? turned around to see the drummer standing on one leg with his eyes closed, practicing the meditative Chinese martial art of Tai Chi.

"I thought, 'Man, this guy really is Devo. He fits right in,'" Casale said, adding that Tai Chi was one of the drummer's greatest passions. "Some bands would be doing drugs and drinking. Alan would find quiet places backstage and do a full session of Tai Chi."

Devo is short for devolution, the idea that man was devolving into its monkey state.

Wow These Beautiful Animation Videos Are Ads for... McDonald's

You usually know an advertisement for McDonald's when you see it. Ethnically diverse group of friends who stay impossibly thin even though they eat at Mickey D's, perfectly dressed burgers and fries that you can almost smell, internal monologues about the deliciousness of the food, so on and so forth. These ads are not like that. They're abstract animations that show McDonald's in a completely different way.

Created by Helsinki-based animation studio Pinata, the video has 2d animation effects, 3D elements and particle simulation. It's a moving piece of art, basically. McDonald's released these three video ads for its McDonald's MyBurger competition in Finland. The video above is like a dark short you'd see from a scrappy Dreamworks. I can hardly believe it's for McDonald's. [Pinata via PSFK]

EU to cut subsidies to big farms

European Union negotiators have agreed a package of reforms to agricultural subsidies which will see big farms lose up to 30% of their payout.

Ministers reached a deal with Euro MPs and the European Commission.

However, environmentalists say many of the green measures in the original proposals have been swept away.

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and rural development payments account for nearly 40% of the EU's long-term budget.

The plan is to spend about 50bn euros (?42bn; $65bn) annually on agriculture in 2014-2020.

Under the deal reached on Wednesday, some of the money withheld from big industrial farms will be redistributed to smaller farms, with an emphasis on those that use eco-friendly methods.

Sugar shortages

The deal still has to be approved by EU governments and the European parliament.

Officials are confident that that will happen, because ministers and parliamentarians have been involved in the negotiating process, says the BBC's Europe correspondent Chris Morris, in Brussels.

Negotiators also agreed to end EU sugar production quotas which critics say have distorted the market for years, and created artificial shortages.

The definition of an "active farmer" has also been contentious. The current payments system is largely based on land area and past subsidy levels, meaning that landowners like airports and sports clubs, which do not farm, have been getting subsidies on the basis of their grasslands or other eligible land areas.

The ministers have agreed on a "short mandatory negative list comprising airports, railway services, waterworks, real estate services and permanent sports and recreational grounds".

Our correspondent says the UK agriculture minister abstained in voting on one of four new regulations, arguing that some member states wanted to go back to the days of butter mountains and wine lakes.

In the 1970s and 80s the CAP took up a bigger share of the EU budget because there were more subsidies for farmers simply to produce. That led to wasteful overproduction.

New palm-sized microarray technique grows 1,200 individual cultures of microbes

June 25, 2013 ? A new palm-sized microarray that holds 1,200 individual cultures of fungi or bacteria could enable faster, more efficient drug discovery, according to a study published in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

Scientists at the University of Texas at San Antonio and the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Fort Sam Houston have developed a microarray platform for culturing fungal biofilms, and validated one potential application of the technology to identify new drugs effective against Candida albicans biofilms. The nano-scale platform technology could one day be used for rapid drug discovery for treatment of any number of fungal or bacterial infections, according to the authors, or even as a rapid clinical test to identify antibiotic drugs that will be effective against a particular infection.

"Even though we have used the antifungal concept for development, it is a universal tool," says co-author Jose Lopez-Ribot of the University of Texas at San Antonio. "It opens a lot of possibilities as a new platform for microbial culture. Any time you need large numbers of cultures, this has a big advantage over other methods."

"The possibility exists to use this same technology for pretty much any other organism," he says.

Microbiology and medicine have become increasingly reliant on micro- and nano-scale technologies because of the increased speed and efficiency they can offer, but until now the cultivation of microorganisms has mostly been conducted on larger scales, in flasks and in trays called micro-titer plates. The microarray technology enables the user to rapidly compare hundreds or thousands of individual cultures of bacteria or fungi, a big benefit in the search for new drugs to treat infections. And like many nano-scale techniques, the nano-culture approach described in the mBio? study is also automated, a feature that saves time, improves reproducibility, and prevents some types of user error.

To test the technique, the authors embedded cells of the opportunistic pathogen C. albicans in each of the 1,200 tiny dots of alginate on the surface of the microarray. Under the microscope, these nano-biofilms of C. albicans, each of which was only 30 nanoliters, exhibited the same growth habits and other outward characteristics as conventional, macroscopic biofilms, and achieved maximum metabolic activity within 12 hours. The tiny cultures were then treated with a wide range of candidate drugs from the National Cancer Institute library, or with different FDA-approved, off-patent antifungal drugs in combination with FK506, an immunosuppressant, for identifying individual or synergistic combinations of compounds effective against biofilm infections. Co-author Anand Ramasubramanian of the University of Texas at San Antonio says that the tests prove the utility of the technology in screening combinations of drugs.

"The antifungal screening results were similar to results in larger macroscale techniques. That gives us confidence that it could be used as a tool to replace existing techniques," says Ramasubramanian.

Going forward, Ramasubramanian says he and his colleagues are testing the microarrays with polymicrobial cultures -- mixtures of fungi and bacteria -- to see whether the technology can be used to explore treatments for mixed infections. They are also exploring clinical applications for the technique, testing patient samples against an array of drugs or combinations of drugs to develop tailored therapies.

Lopez-Ribot says their microarray technique is just the latest development in a decades-long trend toward the tiny in science. "Things are moving toward smaller scale, more powerful techniques. You don't need millions of cells for these assays like we used to -- maybe a few cells will do."

'Titanfall' developer explains why the game won't be on PS4, and the ...

xbox-one

The next-gen mech shooter Titanfall would not be possible without Microsoft?s Xbox One cloud services, according to Respawn Entertainment engineer Jon Shiring. The cloud is tied into Microsoft?s controversial online policies for the new console, and it?s been the subject of confusion and ire from gamers. Shiring took to?Respawn?s blog?to explain the benefits from a developer?s perspective.

According to Shiring, Microsoft?s dedicated servers are the perfect solution to a long-standing problem. Console games with online multiplayer aspects typically use player-hosted servers because dedicated servers are expensive and tough to implement, but dedicated servers offer a superior experience. Microsoft?s dedicated cloud servers allow Respawn to implement more and better AI, physics, and environments, eliminate the ?host advantage? that plagues many online games, thwart some forms of cheating, boost matchmaking speeds, eliminate the need to pause the game when the host player quits, and improve visuals and audio by taking full advantage of the console hardware and leaving other tasks to the cloud processors.

The cloud services aren?t limited to Xbox One games either, and Respawn uses them for the Windows PC and Xbox 360 versions of?Titanfall as well. Respawn approached both Sony and Microsoft about this problem, and Microsoft was the one to implement a solution, Shiring writes.

?Microsoft realized that player-hosted servers are actually holding back online gaming and that this is something that they could help solve, and ran full-speed with this idea,? he writes. ?So they built this powerful system to let us create all sorts of tasks that they will run for us, and it can scale up and down automatically as players come and go.?

?We?want to focus on making awesome games, not on becoming giant worldwide server hosting providers,? he continues. ?The more time I can spend on making our actual game better, the more our players benefit.?

Google Puts Its Own Spin on the Galaxy S4 and HTC One

Two of the most popular Android phones -- the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One -- are now available in Google's own image. While the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One on shelves today run Google's Android software, today Google will begin selling versions of the phones with clean versions of its Android software.

Rather than have HTC's news and social media Blinkfeed software on your HTC One's homescreen or Samsung's widgets pre-loaded on the Galaxy S4, the Google Play Editions of the phones have Google's original Android 4.2 software. Similar to Google's Nexus 4 and other Nexus devices, the software is just as Google intended it with Google apps and features front and center.

The phones, however, are more expensive than the $199 versions you get at AT&T, Verizon and the other carriers. The HTC One will cost $599 and the Galaxy S4 $649. They aren't tied to a carrier, though, so you don't need to commit to two years of service. Instead, you can plug in a SIM card from AT&T or T-Mobile. The units will not be offered for Verizon or Sprint.

Watch the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 Face Off on Video

But why would anyone want these over the version already available on store shelves? First, Google promises that these versions of the phones will get timely Android updates. While it takes carriers and phone makers longer to bring Google's updates to phones, the company ensures that owners of the Google Edition versions will get new software features right after they are announced. Google is expected to release a new version of its Android software called Key Lime Pie before the end of the year.

Additionally, the company is hoping to appeal to users who prefer a cleaner and faster version of Android. "The versions of those handsets that are distributed through carriers today reflect what is being aimed at mainstream consumer," Ross Rubin, principal analyst of Reticle Research, says. "With those, handset vendors want to put their imprint on it, the carriers want to put their imprint on it. These versions offered by Google appeal to purists and enthusiasts and to people who are willing to give up some functionality of the hardware in order to get something that is uncluttered."

Google has worked with Samsung and HTC to offer the new phones. Motorola, which was purchased by Google last year, is expected to release a new made-in America smartphone this summer called the Moto X.

The Google Edition Galaxy S4 and the HTC One can be purchased today through Google's Play Store and will ship July 9.
