SEATTLE (AP) ? Washington State and Washington will meet in the Apple Cup on Friday, Nov. 23, in Pullman, the day after Thanksgiving, one of the revelations when the Pac-12 Conference announced its 2012 football schedules on Wednesday.
Word had leaked of the rivalry game being played Thanksgiving weekend in late November. The schools have typically tried to avoid playing around the Thanksgiving holiday in Pullman in the past because most students are not on campus during the Thanksgiving break. Typically, the game in Pullman has been played the Saturday before Thanksgiving, with one exception being the 2010 game that was played the first Saturday in December.
According to the Washington record book, this will be the first time the schools will not play on a Saturday since Nov. 26, 1936.
Washington State's first season under new coach Mike Leach begins Sept. 1 at BYU, with his home opener a week later against nearby Eastern Washington of the Football Championship Subdivision. The Cougars close out non-conference play at UNLV on Sept. 15 before opening the conference slate a week later hosting Colorado. The Cougars will face Oregon at Seattle's CenturyLink Field on Sept. 29.
The rest of Washington State's schedule is: Oct. 6 at Oregon State; Oct. 13 vs. California; Oct. 27 at Stanford; Nov. 3 at Utah; Nov. 10 vs. UCLA and Nov. 17 at Arizona State.
Washington begins its season on Sept. 1 hosting San Diego State at Seattle's CenturyLink Field. The Huskies will play the 2012 season at the home of the Seattle Seahawks due to renovations at Husky Stadium. Washington's marquee non-conference game is a week later at LSU and the Huskies close out the non-conference slate on Sept. 15 vs. Portland State.
Washington then gets a break before opening conference play on Thursday, Sept. 27, at home vs. Stanford and travels to Oregon on Oct. 6.
The rest of Washington's schedule is: Oct. 13 vs. USC; Oct. 20 at Arizona; Oct. 27 vs. Oregon State; Nov. 2 at California; Nov. 10 vs. Utah and Nov. 17 at Colorado.
