WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration's Race to the Top education competition is getting a facelift.
Congress approved allowing local school districts to compete for federal dollars in the competition, and not just states. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is scheduled Wednesday to address a committee meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, where he is expected to encourage mayors to promote participation in the revamped competition.
Already, billions of dollars have been awarded to winning states in the competition in exchange for making educational reforms favored by the administration.
Congress approved $550 million for the competition in this budget year.
