Good morning,

Welcome to Radioactivity. I?m Rob Lorei. Today we?re going to talk with Ivan Penn who has been covering utility issues for the Tampa Bay times. There are several important decisions regarding nuclear power that will soon be made. One decision is about the fate of the 36 year old Crystal River nuclear power plant. It has sat idle for three years because of a botched maintenance and repair job. Fixing the plant and bringing it back online could cost as much as $3.5 Billion dollars.

Another decision that will be made is whether or not to build a new nuclear facility- not far from Crystal River?just up the road in Levy County. Federal regulators are in the process of deciding whether Progress Energy Florida should be given the go-ahead to build the new plant. Progress Energy has already been given approval by the state of Florida to charge customers for the construction of the plant- even though there is no guarantee the plant will ever be built.

Ivan Penn of the Tampa Bay Times joins us now on Radioactivity.
