So frustrated with friends and family (LONG Vent) - Adoption.com ...

I am just so hurt and shocked right now. We have our 5 amazing children, who I am so happy we adopted. We get a lot of looks from people in stores, and comments, because there are so many kids and so young. It was a little annoying, but I ignored it. After all, they are strangers. Our family thought we were a little crazy, but supported us.

We decided to keep our home open after the adoptions, and took in our 2 month old FS. We have had him for about 3 weeks now, and he is great. He fits right in our family, our kids adore him, and we adore him. So much so that I find myself dreaming of adopting him too, though we won't even discuss it out loud at this point. He was supposed to be foster only, but...now I don't know what our decision would be if they asked us.

The trouble we are having is with the people we KNOW. I was expecting everyone to be happy for us, and continue to support us. Almost everyone has said "You aren't adopting him, are you?" or "Don't you have enough kids" and I even had one call me a "child hoarder" and another one say I was "Crazy for wanting more." I have been told we don't have enough room (we have an empty bedroom we don't even use!!) and that we are taking time away from our children (definitely not true, but they also think I shouldn't put them in sports they love because it's "too much time"). I thought I was being overly sensitive, but then someone asked "Are you adopting him" and I realized the difference in the questions were the tone and the way they were phrasing it.

It's not like I am not handling it, or they are seeing something I am not. Yes, I am very busy, but I CHOOSE to be that way. I WANT to do my job and all of our activities. All they see is 6 kids, and they wouldn't do it so of course I can't possibly be able to do it.

I am so tired of crying on the way home. How do those of you, with big families, handle these conversations? I can't tell them where to shove it because this IS my extended family and coworkers. I am so tired of being hurt by this, and crying the whole way home. I just want to be happy with my family, is that so wrong?

New Local Food-Industry Website Seeks to Solve Staffing Woes ...

Despite all the ways that technology is supposed to isolate us, it sure seems to be finding more and more ways to connect us these days, and that's thanks in part to folks like Orland Park's Len Kazmierczak.

Kazmierczak has just launched barandwaitstaff.com, a free site he intends to "help the bar and restaurant industry" with. He sent Inc. Well an email to let us know about it and why he started it.

"As a small business owner I was looking for staff, but could not afford to continually pay to post job openings," he wrote. "I have created this site [in] hopes it can help people and make a difference to the job seekers as well as the business owner."

There's more of his explanation up on the site, and the gist is this: He's trying to ease frustrations inherent to owning a restaurant and filling staffing needs.

From his page's "about us" section:?

Through the use of this website business owners can save time filling staffing requirements, but still select the right candidate and job seekers can look for jobs in the bar and restaurant industry without the burdens of a true job search.

So, yeah. Check it out. Last I checked I'm not running a restaurant but there's a good chance some of you folks are, so give it a shot and run it up the flagpole and see.?

Former SD Gov. Rounds announces run for US Senate

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) ? Former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds said Thursday that he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2014.

The former Republican governor's announcement was widely expected, as he said in September that he was forming a committee to explore a run for the seat held by Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson.

Johnson, 65, hasn't officially announced whether he will seek a fourth term. But he released a statement Thursday saying he intends to "put together a winning campaign in the weeks and months ahead," and that his formal announcement will come next year.

Rounds, 58, said at a news conference Thursday that he wants to end the gridlock in Washington, reduce the federal deficit and straighten out health care reform.

"We need to become a country of cooperation instead of confrontation," he said.

Rounds was a state senator from 1991 to 2001 before serving two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011. After leaving office in early 2011, Rounds served as president and CEO of an insurance and real estate company based in Pierre.

Johnson was elected to the U.S. House in 1986 and to the Senate in 1996. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2008. He also previously served in the state Legislature.

The state Democratic Party immediately mounted a defense after the morning announcement. Party Chairman Ben Nesselhuf called Rounds a "nice guy with the wrong priorities" for South Dakota.

Johnson was more complimentary.

"I had an excellent working relationship with (Rounds) during his eight years as Governor, and the fact that he has already re-stated his refusal to take the Grover Norquist 'no tax increases under any circumstances' pledge is a very good sign," Johnson said in a statement.

But he added that he still feels great and has work to do.

"In the meantime, I intend to continue to focus on my important work representing South Dakota," he said.

Johnson defeated prostate cancer in 2004 and had surgery in December 2006 to stop bleeding in his brain. He was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation, a condition that causes arteries and veins in the brain to grow abnormally large, become tangled and sometimes burst.

From the playground to the office, a key aspect of our social lives involves figuring out who "belongs" and who doesn't. Our biases lead us -- whether we're aware of it or not -- to favor people who belong to our own social group. Scientists theorize that these prevalent in-group biases may give us a competitive advantage against others, especially when important resources are limited.

Psychological scientist Christopher Rodeheffer and his colleagues at Texas Christian University wanted to examine whether resource scarcity might actually lead us to change our definition of who belongs to our social group. Their new research is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

One way of defining an in-group is according to outward appearance. Rodeheffer and colleagues hypothesized that people exposed to situations of scarcity would narrow their definition of who "belongs" and would be less likely to categorize a racially ambiguous face as part of their racial in-group.

In their first experiment, the researchers asked 71 White college students to look at captioned pictures that depicted instances in which resources were scarce (e.g., a picture of an empty office with captions about a shortage of good jobs) or abundant (e.g., a picture of a thriving office with captions about there being plenty of good jobs).

Rodeheffer and his colleagues created a series of biracial faces by averaging one White and one Black face using a face-averaging software program. They asked the participants to look at the biracial faces and categorize each face as either Black or White.

The findings showed that students who had looked at pictures depicting scarce resources were more likely to categorize the faces as Black than students who had seen the pictures of abundant resources.

These results were confirmed in a second experiment that used a verbal priming procedure in which the students were primed to think about resource scarcity or abundance by completing analogy problems.

According to the researchers, these findings suggest that "times of economic hardship may limit the inclusiveness of people's racial in-groups."

Rodeheffer and his colleagues note that future studies should examine whether the effects of resource availability cues on racial categorization are observed for participants of other races to ensure that the results are applicable across racial groups.

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency

By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

  1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
  2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
  3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
  4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
  5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
  6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
  7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
  8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

Examples:

  • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
  • Military Chest with handles
  • Military Aid Station chest containers
  • Military hard plastic or metal containers
  • Nylon, Leather or Canvas Back Packs
  • Luggage with wheels and handle
  • Purse or designer bag
  • Lunch box
  • Square or rectangle storage containers
  • Tupperware containers
  • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
  • Hunting vests
  • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.

HP rebuffs ex-Autonomy CEO, warns of legal action

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hewlett Packard Co rebuffed a request by former Autonomy Chief Executive Mike Lynch to detail accusations of accounting fraud leveled against the British software company and its former executives, and challenged Lynch to submit to questions under penalty of perjury.

HP was responding to an open letter that Lynch shot to HP's board on Tuesday, asking for specifics of the U.S. company's allegations that Lynch and former Autonomy executives inflated revenue and gross margins, which HP said last week forced it to take an $8.8 billion writedown on Autonomy's value.

In his letter, Lynch again flatly rejected any accusations of impropriety, and requested that HP's board share with him the same documents it had submitted to U.S. and British regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice.

Tuesday's exchange between HP, the world's largest computing company by revenue, and the former chief of Autonomy, which HP acquired for upwards of $11 billion last year, escalated a row that erupted last week when HP stunned investors by publicly accusing Lynch and other unnamed executives of inflating financial results such as margins.

The revelation again brought into question the competence of HP, which has made a series of missteps in past years including failed acquisitions and poor strategic decisions.

In Tuesday's letter, Lynch challenged HP to elaborate on how it calculated the writedown, especially $5 billion that the company has said was directly attributable to accounting impropriety at Autonomy.

"Can HP really state that no part of the $5 billion writedown was, or should be, attributed to HP's operational and financial mismanagement of Autonomy since the acquisition?" Lynch asked in the letter.

HP responded by saying the matter was now in the hands of the SEC, the UK's Serious Fraud Office and the Justice Department, and that it will defer to those agencies on how to engage with Lynch. It also warned it will take legal action against "parties involved" at the appropriate time.

"While Dr. Lynch is eager for a debate, we believe the legal process is the correct method in which to bring out the facts and take action on behalf of our shareholders," HP said in an emailed response.

"In that setting, we look forward to hearing Dr. Lynch and other former Autonomy employees answer questions under penalty of perjury."

HP's shares were down 1.5 percent at $12.55 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.

Last week's announcement came alongside the disclosure of a 6.7 percent slide in quarterly revenue, and occurred just three months after the company took a writedown of almost $11 billion on its EDS services division.

HP has for years relied on deal-making, acquiring businesses ranging from EDS to Compaq to Palm, but has largely failed to articulate a clear strategy or establish a strong position in growth businesses like computer services or mobile computing.

Palestinians win support from Swiss, Danes for U.N. vote

GENEVA/RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Switzerland and Denmark on Wednesday joined a growing list of European countries that back an upgrade for Palestinians to non-member status at the United Nations, a victory that would be a diplomatic boost to their aspirations for statehood.

With overwhelming support from the developing world, the Palestinians appear certain to earn approval in the 193-member U.N. General Assembly for a status upgrade to "observer state" on Thursday.

Israel and its main ally the United States oppose the move, which would implicitly recognize Palestinian statehood.

France said on Tuesday it would vote in favor of non-member status and Switzerland and Denmark have now followed suit.

"The decision to support the resolution is in accordance with Switzerland's policy to seek a negotiated, just, and durable peace between Israel and an independent and viable Palestinian state within secure and internationally recognized borders," the Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Swiss decision followed a visit to Berne by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this month as the country hesitated between voting in favor of the resolution or abstaining.

A positive vote would make it possible to "revitalize the concept of a two-state solution by placing Israel and Palestine on an equal footing in future peace negotiations", the Swiss ministry said.

Abbas had reiterated his commitment to relaunch the peace process immediately following the U.N. vote, it said.

In Copenhagen, the Danish foreign minister said Denmark would also vote "yes".

"It is a moderate text which clearly highlights the need for peace negotiations and negotiations for a two-state solution that can secure Palestinians a safe and sustainable state side by side with Israel, minister Villy Sovndal said.

Britain, which has been cool on the idea, was due to announce its decision later in the day.

Israel and the United States condemn the U.N. bid, saying the only genuine route to statehood for the Palestinians is via a peace agreement made in direct talks with Israel.

Talks however have been stalled for two years, mainly over the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which have expanded despite being deemed illegal by most of the world.

TURNING POINT

In Ramallah in the West Bank, senior Palestine Liberation Organization official Hanan Ashrawi said the response was encouraging and sent a message of hope to all Palestinians.

"This constitutes a historical turning point and opportunity for the world to rectify a grave historical injustice that the Palestinians have undergone since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948."

"Now the people of this land, with enormous solidarity, is telling the whole world not only that we exist, but we are on our land and we have a right to self-determination and statehood," she said.

European countries are eager to bolster moderates such as Abbas after an eight-day conflict this month between Israel and Gaza-based Islamists estranged from more moderate West Bank compatriots and opposed to Israel's very existence.

Israel and the United States have mooted withholding aid and tax revenue that the Palestinian government in the West Bank needs to survive. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has also viewed options that include bringing down Abbas.

The change would allow the Palestinian territories to access bodies like the International Criminal Court, which prosecutes people for genocide, war crimes and other human rights violations.

After Israeli, British and U.S. diplomats unsuccessfully tried to persuade the Palestinians to drop their upgrade bid, they focused on trying to get the Palestinians to guarantee that they would forego complaining about Israel to the ICC.

Britain, which had pushed European countries to abstain on the U.N. vote, has asked the Palestinians to forego joining the ICC in return for its vote. Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said London had not yet decided how to vote.

"We have made consistently clear that it is wrong for the Palestinians to bring this resolution to a vote at this time and that it isn't likely to be a helpful contribution to the peace process in the Middle East," Lyall said in New York on Tuesday.

The Palestinian U.N. observer, Riyad Mansour, said the Palestinians would not rush to sign up to the ICC if they win the U.N. status upgrade. But seeking action against Israel in the court would remain an option, he told a news conference at the United Nations on Tuesday.

Mansour said that if Israel continued to violate international law, particularly by building settlements in the West Bank - territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War - then the Palestinians would consult with friends, including Europe, on what to do next.

The United States has suggested aid for the Palestinians - and possibly some funding for the United Nations - could also be at risk if the Palestinians win the U.N. upgrade. Israel has said it may cancel the Paris Protocol, an economic accord it maintains with the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority.

BT lets site visitors add features to landlines with only a phone number and postcode

BT site

If you're subscribed to BT's landline phone service, you may want to keep an eye on your bill in the near future. The British provider recently patched up a website issue that showed account holders' full names, but attention is being drawn to an approach that lets visitors add paid features like TV service using only an account's phone number and postcode as credentials. When both of these are potentially in the public eye, that creates understandable concerns that a rogue agent could hike someone's rates without consent -- even the email address BT uses to confirm changes is only chosen on the spot, which could keep the change a secret early on. BT so far contends that the light security is for "customer convenience," although we've reached out to verify whether or not that will continue to be the company's policy going forward. In the meantime, those still on the carrier's traditional phone service will want to be careful about giving out their number to strangers; while the risk isn't extreme in practice, there's no need to hand someone the keys to the kingdom.

Milan beats Juventus 1-0 after disputed penalty

By DANIELLA MATAR

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:01 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan earned a surprising 1-0 victory over defending champion and Serie A leader Juventus on Sunday after another disputed goal at the San Siro.

Robinho scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot after Mauricio Isla was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, although replays showed it appeared to have struck his side.

Sebastian Giovinco went closest to equalizing for Juventus but Milan always looked dangerous on the counter and had several chances to extend its lead as it recorded a morale-boosting win.

"I believe the lads deserved this win, regardless of whether the penalty should have been given or not," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "Having seen replays it looks like it wasn't a penalty. We have to always play with this intensity, even against the bottom team. ... Everyone said before the Napoli game that we were a dead team and instead we've had a great week."

It was only Juve's second loss in 53 league games. Inter Milan can now close the gap to one point if it beats Parma on Monday.

"We didn't play as a squad tonight, we couldn't manage to play our usual football," Juventus assistant coach Angelo Alessio said. "When you lose a game like this you always look for problems but it's just that the team didn't play as it has done in the past three or four games.

"We know that there are always mistakes for and against us. I don't dare to think what would have happened if we had won with such a penalty. It should have ended as a draw. But everything went against us tonight and we have to accept the defeat."

Milan fans may feel it goes some way to atoning for a refereeing error in last season's match, which ended 1-1 after Sulley Muntari's goal was not spotted by the officials.

That match was a title showdown nine months ago, but few expected anything other than a Juventus win this time around, with Milan lying a dismal 12th and having lost six games already this season.

Elsewhere, Roma won 1-0 at struggling Pescara to mark a happy return for coach Zdenek Zeman to the club he steered to promotion as Serie B winners last season.

Milan President Silvio Berlusconi had made another visit to the training ground on Saturday to give the squad a pep talk and just like last week it had an immediate effect.

After his visit to Milanello last week, Milan came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at title-chasing Napoli. It went on in midweek to secure qualification for the Champions League knockout stage.

Berlusconi was in the stands watching along with former Milan icon Marco Van Basten.

The Rossoneri almost got off to a perfect start as Mattia De Sciglio skipped past first Kwadwo Asamoah and then Andrea Pirlo before unleashing a shot from just outside the area which whistled past the left upright.

Milan had another good chance in the 14th minute but Kevin-Prince Boateng fired straight at Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon following some good interplay with Robinho.

The Milan defense has been shambolic at times this season but it was dealing well with everything Juventus was throwing at it and stand-in goalkeeper Marco Amelia didn't have to make a save until the 21st minute when he gathered a weak shot from Fabio Quagliarella at the edge of the area.

Milan's penalty came on the half hour mark when Robinho crossed in towards Antonio Nocerino and the ball seemed to strike Isla on the side, but he was penalized for a handball.

Buffon guessed the right way and got a hand to Robinho's spot kick but couldn't prevent it from going in at the bottom left corner.

Juventus had its best chances of the game just after the hour mark. Amelia did well to punch Arturo Vidal's cross clear but it fell to Pirlo who put it back into the area, only for Mirko Vucinic to blaze woefully over.

The visitors went even closer moments later when Simone Padoin - who had come on as a halftime substitute for Isla - crossed in and Giovinco's acrobatic overhead kick flew narrowly wide.

In Pescara, Mattia Destro gave Roma the lead in the fifth minute and could have added to his tally but missed several clear chances.

It was the 100th official game in charge of Roma for Zeman, who is in his second spell at the club.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina's run of five successive victories ended after twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 at Torino.

Alessio Cerci, who is on loan from Fiorentina, gave Torino the lead in the 40th minute.

Gonzalo Rodriguez leveled from the spot but Torino restored its lead moments later when Valter Birsa's cross evaded everyone and ended up in the back of the net.

Fiorentina snatched a point six minutes from time when Mounir El Hamdaoui, who had only been on the pitch for less than two minutes, smashed home the equalizer.

Genoa is out of the relegation zone after ending a run of six successive defeats with a 1-0 win at Atalanta.

Andrea Bertolacci scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute to hand Genoa its first win in 10 matches.

Genoa's Emiliano Moretti was sent off for a second yellow card four minutes from time.

Bologna lost 1-0 at Sampdoria after playing almost the entire match in 10 men following Archimede Morleo's dismissal. Andrea Poli grabbed the only goal of the game in the 61st.

Elsewhere, Siena drew 0-0 at Chievo Verona. Substitute Chievo striker Mamadou Samassa was sent off five minutes from time following a second booking.

"Be Still This Season..."~ A Guest Post by JES | Deep Roots at Home

?To every thing there is a season,

and a time to every purpose under the heaven??

After all the hard work in the previous months of sowing and reaping, it is no wonder God created winter. Like the seventh day is given as a day of rest, one may consider this snow-filled season as a sign to move indoors and give your family its much needed repose.

Sadly, it is so easy to get caught up in all the ?so called deals? and marketing strategies that the media has designed to keep us out of our peaceful parlors and into the mall parking lots. There is a mad rush in the streets when there should be a cozy calm.

Your presence at home is the best blessing you can offer your family.?Keep these months sacred and special by spending time inside your God given sphere. Light your scented candles, prepare your baked goods, fire up the tea kettle and grab a stack of inspiring books and board games. Meet your loved ones in the family room. Choose to?really?live this season out by spending your precious time at home. Life is short. Every day a beloved soul is nearing their last breath. Slow down and show them they are important through your family fellowship.

God does not want us running around town and exhausting ourselves like half crazed ?Martha?s?. The best gift you can give your family is?you?and?your undivided attention. Don?t allow yourself to be caught up in this overwhelming, commercially-created, chaotic, and frenzied rush for our instructions are clear?

?Be still, and know that I am God:

I will be exalted among the heathen,

I will be exalted in the earth.?

~ Psalm 46:10

Finally, Goatse Lands in the App Store

How the iTunes App Store approval process works is still a complete mystery to those on the outside. Seemingly innocuous apps get rejected all the time, while a game like Word of the Rings with an icon that pays tribute to the infamous Goatse image have no problem passing muster. More »

A Little Class on the Internet: Towards the end of banner ads

A Little Class on the Internet: Towards the end of banner ads

Towards the end of banner ads

18 years ago, banner ads were invented and became the main source of revenue for a lot of web publishers. Since then, the situation has remained pretty much fixed while the Web has been evolving tremendously. We know that advertisers are increasingly dissatisfied with banner ads. These rectangles pushed on the side lines of the web page that few people pay attention to. Banner ads are known to have very low CTR and advertisers start thinking there might be more entertaining and appealing way to advertise on-line, while not being entirely sure yet of what will ultimately replace banner ads.Still, this article mentions some interesting potential orientations. For instance, full page ads that would appear between two web pages and that people could skip or not. Some companies are also already trying to innovate. For example, Foursquare has started an innovative way to publish ads to users who check in to their locations. Whatever the solution is, banner ads should slowly disappear to the benefit of more effective ways of advertising online. The replacement solutions though still have to be defined.

Shredded Police Documents Found At Macy's 2012 Thanksgiving Day Parade

Attendees at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday were alarmed to discover something unusual littered among the usual multicolored confetti: confidential police documents, shredded but still legible.

WPIX reports that the documents belonged to New York's Nassau County Police Department. Among the information gleaned from the shreds of paper were "social security numbers and banking information for police employees, some of whom are undercover officers." Mentions of Mitt Romney's motorcade -- probably a reference to Romney's appearance at Hofstra University for a presidential debate in October -- were also visible.

The would-be confetti was found by Ethan Finklestein, a college student and New York native, who described the discovery to WPIX:

"It landed on [a friend's] shoulder," Finkelstein told PIX11 News, "and it says 'SSN' and it's written like a social security number, and we're like, 'That's really bizarre.'

It made the Tufts University freshman concerned, so he and his friends picked up more of the confetti that had fallen around them.

"There are phone numbers, addresses, more social security numbers, license plate numbers and then we find all these incident reports from police."

One confetti strip indicates that it's from an arrest record, and other strips offer more detail. "This is really shocking," Finkelstein said. "It says, 'At 4:30 A.M. a pipe bomb was thrown at a house in the Kings Grant' area."

The documents were shredded horizontally, rather than vertically -- "one of the least secure methods," Newsday points out -- which allowed entire lines of text to be easily read.

Macy's has denied that it was the source of the confetti, stating in an interview with WPIX that it's official confetti materials are punched-out pieces, rather than shreds, of colorful paper. Gawker, meanwhile, speculates that the shredded documents "could've come out of any of the countless number of office windows along the 6th Avenue parade route."

A representative for Nassau County Police told WPIX that the Department was "very concerned about this situation. We will be conducting an investigation into this matter as well as reviewing our procedures for the disposing of sensitive documents."

As Newsday notes, the Department "did not address who shreds sensitive police documents, who carts them away, or the progress, if any, of the investigation so far."

Intel's Two-Pronged Evolution

It's hard to think of an IT vendor with a stronger leadership position than Intel, but the company is having trouble shaking off the perception that it is on the ropes or headed for disaster in some of its core markets. On one hand, Intel's mission-critical Itanium platform suffered when Oracle and HP publicly butted heads in an altercation that ended up in court.
