PHILADELPHIA ? Lawyers for a former Pennsylvania senator convicted of defrauding the state Senate and two nonprofits of more than $2 million say his prison emails show only the normal emotions that inmates experience ? and not the revenge plots suggested by prosecutors.
Philadelphia Democrat Vincent Fumo is being re-sentenced this coming week in his sweeping corruption case.
The 68-year-old Fumo is currently serving a 55-month term in federal prison in Ashland, Ky. But prosecutors successfully appealed, and will again push for a sentence of 17 to 22 years.
Fumo calls his 2009 conviction "a travesty of justice" in the emails. Prosecutors say they show him plotting revenge on people who crossed him.
But Fumo's lawyers say the disclosure of the emails smacks of Big Brother ? even if prison emails are not confidential.
Fumo's sentencing before Senior District Judge Ronald Buckwalter starts Wednesday.
