When it comes to selecting a home for Sudbury's new casino, a majority of Sudbury Star readers would like to see it where the current gambling facility is located -- Sudbury Downs.

As of early Sunday afternoon, a total of 320 readers or 33% voted for the new, larger casino to be located at the racetrack, which currently houses The Slots at Sudbury Downs.

The downtown received 250 votes (25%), while the south end got 94 votes (10%). Coming in third was 'I'm opposed to casinos' with 199 votes (20%).

Other options received only a small percentage of votes each: New Sudbury (51 votes -- 5%); Valley East (54 -- 5%); and somewhere else (16 votes -- 2%).

The majority of the more than 50 callers who voted on the newspaper's hotline were split between the downtown and Sudbury Downs in Chelmsford. There was the occasional vote of support for the south end and Valley East, with a handful of people opposed to casinos as a whole.

"When it first came around, Sudbury didn't want anything to do with it," said one male caller, who favoured Chelmsford. "Why should they have it now?"

"It should be downtown," said one woman. "Then, at least, they would fix the downtown streets."

"Most of the councillors didn't want it downtown in the first place and the south end is expanding very fast," said one man who suggested the casino should go near the Southridge Mall.

"Chelmsford at Sudbury Downs," said one woman. "No one is going to drive into downtown Sudbury. I can't believe they are talking about destroying the racing industry in Sudbury."

"It would be too easy for people on welfare to go in and spend their money," said one woman who is opposed to casinos.

"There are enough people on welfare in Sudbury," said another woman who is opposed to casinos. "We don't need it to make more people poor."

"They are not gaming and entertainment," said yet another woman opposed to casinos. "I call it gambling and corruption of people's lives."
