You?re a hyperlocal news publisher who has just come off a pretty good year. The clicks through your digital screen door are steadily increasing, you?re getting more than a trickle of ad squares, and you didn?t have to borrow against your credit card once in the past six months to pay bills ? a first. But you know in your entrepreneurial bones it?s time to take your two-year-old enterprise to that ?next level.?

So what should you do? Maybe give yourself a break from 60-hour weeks and invest in your first full-time reporter? Maybe not. Maybe the better choice would be to focus on technology that exploits social media. Fast-improving digital technology can lead to better content, more engaged users and open the way to new advertisers, including sponsors. Technology is also less expensive than staff.

Social media like Twitter and Facebook have become de rigeur for most publishers, but they?re not enough to get to the next level. In order to really interact with your community, you have to tear down the walls of your newsroom, and recreate that newsroom outside, among the people and places you cover. This isn?t as radical as it sounds if you?re dedicated to building a closer bond of trust with your contributors.

Invite readers not just to comment on articles you publish but write their own articles on topics that keep animating your community week after week.

Take food choices on the menu at your local schools ? a controversial topic that is often a hot-button local news issues. The conventional way to approach this topic is quote the school system?s nutritionist and reel off some sample menus featuring more vegetables and fruits. That?s okay, for starters. But it ignores the people who matter the most ? the students who have to eat the artichokes and apples that replace the french fries and potato chips. In that situation, why not invite some seniors from the high school to conduct their own tasting session on video, and let those students upload clips directly to the site?

If the high schoolers have opinions that diverge from the nutritionist?s, that?s okay. It can lead to further discussion on the site ? maybe a riposte from the student guinea pigs ? and possibly a compromise that accommodates teenage palates but also recognizes the importance of healthier school lunch menus. If you can achieve this, you?re sure to see a spurt in user engagement, which current and potential local advertisers will notice.

But none of this can happen if your content management system isn?t powerful and flexible enough to allow contributors to create articles and even whole pages without going through your site?s editorial gates? ? and many entrepreneurial local publishers aren?t prepared to make radical changes to their daily publishing operations. A recent survey of Chicago area publishers by Knight found many local publishers to be less than confident about what to do about technology.

If you?re unsure about the social-media potential of your CMS, send some queries to the platform so you can develop some best practices. If your platform is open source, you may have to pay a premium to add self-publishing options. But any fee will be a lot less expensive than hiring editorial staff.

Another alternative is checking out alternative platforms, like the Django-based open-source platform, Project Armstrong, that?s being developed by Texas Tribune and Bay Citizen with funding from the Knight Foundation.? This software is being rapidly revised based on a steady flow of suggestions from initial users ? including some on serving ads ? so it?s definitely worth checking out if you want to stay close to the leading edge.

Katy Perry may be deep in shooting the video for her latest single, "Part of Me." The singer was spotted wearing a military uniform on the set of something this week.

In several photos that made their way online, Perry dons a cropped black wig and fatigues. One shot is of her standing next to male soldiers. Another features her is of her standing in a store. The last photo is of her in a pool with a soldier (still wearing the army garb). According to Perez Hilton, she is shooting the military-themed video at Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California.

A rep for the base could not confirm reports that she is shooting there when contacted by MTV News. Meanwhile, her rep had not responded to our request for comment by press time.

Earlier this week, Perry teased that she was looking forward to hitting the set for the "Part of Me" video. "Holy power of the Grammy's, Part Of Me is already top 10 on itunes! U guys are killing it! NICE! Can't wait to shoot this video!" she tweeted on Monday, one day after she debuted the song at the Grammys.

The Teenage Dream: Complete Confection song is a bit darker than most Perry fans might be used to. The song is about the dissolution of a relationship, during which Perry sings scathing lines like "Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now."

And in what has been taken as a jab at her former hubby, Russell Brand, she adds, "You can keep the diamond ring/ It don't mean nothing anyway."

TCU football players among 17 caught in drug sting (AP)

FORT WORTH, Texas ? Four Texas Christian University football players were among 17 students arrested Wednesday in a campus drug bust, police said.

Police said those arrested were caught making "hand-to-hand" sales of marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs to undercover officers.

"There is no doubt," TCU Police Chief Steve McGee said at a morning news conference following the arrests. He did not immediately identify the students.

McGee said the arrests came after a six-month investigation prompted by complaints from students, parents and others in the community. Police would not rule out more arrests, but said only people caught selling drugs had been arrested Wednesday.

School chancellor Victor Boschini called the students' actions "simply unacceptable."

Police said they had not determined whether any of the football players arrested were selling to other athletes. But Boschini suggested the four players' involvement was not a sign of a larger issue.

"I don't think it's a football problem," Boschini said.

A message seeking comment was left for TCU football spokesman Mark Cohen.

TCU is located in Fort Worth and has an enrollment of about 9,500 students. The Horned Frogs are set to join the Big 12 later this year in a move expected to be a boon for their athletic program.

UN backs call for unity government for Maldives (AP)

MALE, Maldives ? The United Nations on Monday backed Maldives' new leader's proposal for a national unity government though the ousted leader is calling for a snap poll to resolve a political crisis.

U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco called on all parties to come together "on the principle of inclusiveness and national unity, and reach a consensus on the way forward."

Former President Mohamed Nasheed resigned last Tuesday after months of public protests and fading support from the police and military. His vice president succeeded him and has been forming a government.

Nasheed later claimed he was forced out at gunpoint in a coup and demanded an early election. His claim sparked angry demonstrations in capital, Male, which the police put down in a violent crackdown. In far-off atolls in this archipelago, Nasheed's supporters captured and burnt down police stations, vehicles and court houses.

The new government insists Nasheed stepped down voluntarily, and although police have issued an arrest warrant against the former leader, there has been no move to arrest Nasheed.

Nasheed's supporters have since held nonviolent nightly protests. Speaking to his supporters at Monday's demonstration, Nasheed called Maldivians to civil disobedience if the new President Mohammed Waheed Hassan does not resign for an early election.

Maldives' next presidential election is scheduled for next year.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake said Saturday that the police, elections commission and the judiciary were not sufficiently prepared for a free and fair election.

Political unrest, simmering for the last few months, escalated after a senior judge was arrested by Nasheed's government and accused of political bias.

Hassan has invited Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party to join his Cabinet, which swelled to eight members after Sunday's appointment of six ministers.

Skaters still hold hope for Dutch skating marathon (AP)

HINDELOOPEN, Netherlands ? Under leaden skies, a steady stream of Lycra-clad skaters duck slightly as they glide under one of the wooden bridges over the Zijlroade river that runs like a gray ribbon through this picturesque town on the route of the Eleven Cities Tour.

A day after organizers ruled that ice is too dangerous for the legendary 125-mile (200-kilometer) Elfstedentocht race with 16,000 competitors to go ahead, hundreds of skaters took to the route Thursday, gliding peacefully through the flat, frozen landscape, their skates making a metallic click on the ice.

Standing on the ice next to a bridge in Hindeloopen, a cluster of historic houses huddled around the Zijlroade, Thomas Mogendorff said he had one of the coveted tickets for the race and was refusing to give up hope that it might still go ahead.

"I won't tear up the ticket until all the ice has thawed," he said. "I'm still hoping they were wrong and it will freeze again."

Mogendorff, a short-track speedskater used to powering around manicured indoor ovals, was getting used to skating on natural ice, with slushy, rutted patches under bridges and deep cracks in other places.

"In short-track, one crack and you fall and your race is over," he said. "Here there are cracks everywhere."

Skating in winter is a way of life for the Dutch, who learn as young children by pushing chairs around frozen ponds to help them keep their balance. As skies cleared in the afternoon Thursday and schools emptied, laughing youngsters spilled onto the ice in Hindeloopen, some on skates, others skidding around in winter boots.

That deeply ingrained love of skating is part of the reason for the Elfstedentocht's popularity. Another is its rarity ? it has only been staged 15 times since the inaugural race in 1909.

The race was last staged in 1997, its winner, farmer Henk Angenent, becoming an overnight celebrity.

The organizing committee, the Frisian Eleven Cities Association, only allows it when ice across the entire route is six inches (15 centimeters) thick. Often, ice is thick enough on one part of the track but not others. This week, it was too thin almost everywhere.

In Hindeloopen "it was only 5 centimeters (2 inches) thick in places," said local skating official Gauke Bootsma. "You can't let 16,000 people skate over that."

At a nationally televised news conference Wednesday night, association Chairman Wiebe Wieling disappointed the nation when he said: "We can't let the tour go ahead at the moment."

The tour got a royal seal of approval in 1986, when heir to the Dutch throne Crown Prince Willem-Alexander completed the grueling race, registering under the name W.A. van Buren to shield his true identity. Exhausted, he fell into the arms of his mother and father, Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus, as he crossed the finishing line in darkness.

Bootsma also runs a museum of skating and a cafe along the tour route. He said business was fine despite the tour not going ahead.

"If people are skating the tour, they have no time to come in for a drink," he said. "Now people take their time and stop here for a rest."

Skaters interviewed on the ice by The Associated Press had mixed feelings about the event not going ahead ? disappointed but at the same time happy to be able to skate from town to town through the deep-frozen landscape in relative peace as long as the ice lasts. A thaw is forecast from Sunday.

Jisk Schuurmans, a Frisian farmer visiting from his home in Canada, struggled to put into words the race's mythical appeal to the Dutch national psyche.

"It's everything," he said. "You can't get any better than this."

But he also said the near-hysteria about the race in recent days took the edge off the event.

"It's too chaotic now, there's too much hype," he said.

Siebe de Boer, 69, pulled up at a bridge 12 miles (20 kilometers) into his 18-mile (30-kilometer) skate and said he was disappointed, but also was a typically levelheaded Frisian.

"If it can't happen, it can't happen," he said. "We're staying down to earth about it."

Ben Nijman, 56, explained the allure of skating on frozen canals as he warmed up in a canalside cafe over a bowl of pea soup ? traditional skating food, known locally as snert.

Powell social worker's frantic 911 calls released

Police in Washington state released a 911 call placed by the social worker who dropped Josh Powell's two young sons off before he murdered them and took his own life in a house fire. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

PUYALLUP, Wash. --?Emergency calls placed?in the minutes after Josh Powell killed his two young sons and then set his home on fire were released Tuesday, including one from the "traumatized" social worker who was outside the house and saw the flames.

The social worker had brought Charlie, 5, and Braden, 7, to the house for their court-ordered supervised visit on Sunday. She frantically called for help as soon as she said Powell took the children and shut her out of the house.

"Nothing like this has ever happened before, I'm really shocked, I can hear one of the kids crying," the woman said. "This is the craziest thing, he looked right at me and closed the door."

Concerned that the children might be in a life-threatening situation, the woman also told dispatchers she smelled gas coming from the house. After the house exploded in flames, she called again.

"He blew up the house and the kids!" she cried. "He slammed the door in my face!"

Excerpts from the call were obtained and broadcast Tuesday night by Washington NBC affiliate, KING5.

It also spoke to the husband of the unnamed social worker, who said she was "not doing very well" despite being offered counseling.

He told the station she was "devastated and traumatized" by the episode and had worked with the boys for a long time, forming a bond with them.

The husband, who was also not named, told KING-5 she made a distraught call to him after the fire, repeatedly saying about the boys: "They trusted me, they trusted me."

The double murder-suicide took place days after Powell, whose wife Susan went missing in 2009, was ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation as part of a bid to regain custody of his children from his in-laws.

Report: Powell left apologetic voicemail minutes before death

Authorities in Washington and Utah, from where the family moved, are now effectively treating the disappearance of Susan Powell as murder, even though her body has yet to be found.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to Chuck and Judy Cox, parents of Susan Powell, about their grandsons' deaths and their daughter's disappearance.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill acknowledged for the first time that investigators believe Powell is likely dead, but he said in an interview with the AP that the case remains a missing persons probe for now.

"I think when I talk about it as a missing persons case, that's because we haven't located the body of Susan Powell," Gill said. "Do we think that she may have met harm? Sure. I think that's been an ongoing assumption with law enforcement."

Investigators said Josh Powell withdrew $7,000 in cash from a bank the day before he killed himself and his two young sons in the house fire.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said detectives obtained Powell's bank records Monday, and on Tuesday they searched a storage unit he rented. It isn't clear what happened to the money.

Josh Powell claimed that on the night Susan Powell vanished, he took Charlie and Braden from their then home in West Valley City, Utah, on a late-night camping trip. Authorities eventually searched the central Utah desert but found nothing.

Susan Powell's father said that when police went to the family home after she was reported missing, they found a wet spot in the house being dried by two fans. Police have not commented further on what they found.

Last September, authorities got a warrant to search the home of Josh Powell's father, Steve. Josh Powell and his sons were living there at the time. The documents obtained by the AP did not specify a suspect.

In addition to the charges, the warrant listed Steve Powell's work laptop computer as well as cars that he used.

Authorities found explicit images on his computers during the search, and he was jailed on voyeurism and child porn charges. The boys were later sent to live with Susan Powell's parents.

Speaking to reporters Monday after the boys' deaths, their grandfather Charles Cox said the boys were emotionally distant when they first arrived at their home but recently had begun to open up.

The boys had not recently made more comments about what may have happened to their mother, Cox said, though he related what Braden said nearly two years ago.

"The four ladies that were supervising that activity said, 'Well, what's this?' 'That's us going camping.' 'Who's in the car?' And Braden said, 'That's Daddy, that's Charlie, that's me.' Then he said, 'Well, mommy's in the trunk,'" Cox said.

"Well if Mommy's in the trunk, why is she in the trunk?' He didn't know, he didn't say, I guess. Then, he said,l we stopped somewhere and mommy and daddy got out and mommy didn't come back," he said.

West Valley, Utah, police chief Buzz?Nielsen said despite the death of the young boys and Josh Powell, the probe would continue.

"Our case is not closed," he said.

Lindquist, who is overseeing the voyeurism prosecution of Steve Powell but is not directly involved in the Susan Powell case, said it's clear to him that it's a homicide case.
